Soil Sampling

We conduct in-person stratifications of your property and take market-leading meter-deep soil cores to evaluate the true potential of your property (in additional to geospatial analysis). We conduct frequent re-measurements to track your progress and provide data back to your operation.

Ranch Advisory

We have decades of experience in developing environmental strategies to improve regenerative ranching. We’ll work with you to ensure your unique land and management goals combine to return more value.

Research

We partner with Universities and researchers in your community to find new value for producers by quantifying managed grazing approaches & tracking natural capital production across landscapes.

Technology & Investment

We can provide you with the latest technology including virtual fencing and remote sensing so that you can monitor your operation at scale. We collect thousands of data points that allow you to build a robust plan for your livestock and soil. We can also co-invest in water infrastructure and perennial seeding to unlock your next phase of growth.

Carbon Credit Issuance

We handle all the paperwork and processes to provide you with a new revenue stream that can support sustained sustainability on your property. We help protect your offset claims quality with rigorous science and third party certification.

FAQs

  • Kateri unlocks the potential of your lands to build natural capital.

We provide soil sampling, ranch advisory, technology, and other investments into properties while enabling ranchers to secure new income streams through carbon credits and other nature-based programs.

Kateri will always strive to bring the latest resources and technology to our ranchers to give them more options to evaluate and understand their soil and animal health.

  • Our programs are holistic beyond just soil carbon and the associated financial benefits. We invest in water infrastructure, perennial seeding, and other soil enrichment including:

    • Improved biodiversity (which we measure)

    • More native forage

    • Increased stocking density

    • Greater water retention and improved drought resistance

    • Frequent data insights on soil health

    • Data on animal behavior, and forage quality

  • Kateri uses a combination of approved biogeochemical models and soil samples to quantify the amount of carbon stored in your soil. We take a preliminary sample to stratify your property into sections. From there, we take baseline samples to a depth of 1-meter, repeating the process every 3-5 years. We go further to test beyond just soil organic carbon so we can keep you informed about the cumulative health of your soil. Most groups only take 30 cm samples, but we go down to a meter because soil health and root systems require depth.

  • Kateri works with the premier credit registries. For our U.S. based projects, we utilize Climate Action Reserve’s Soil Enrichment Protocol. For international projects, we utilize Verra’s VM0042 protocol. Both of these credits are recognized by multi-nationals and governments as high-quality projects. Most Fortune 500 customers we have worked with prefer these credit types.

  • Kateri believes that carbon sequestration requires a multi-pronged approach to soil health. That is why we help ranchers invest to build cumulative natural capital.

Some common investment areas are in water infrastructure and perennial seeding. We have flexibility to fund projects that can help drive positive change in your landscape.

  • We’ve locked into a multi-year, multi-million purchase agreement with one of the largest energy companies in the world. This allows us to provide certainty to our ranchers and invest into properties upfront to drive sustained change.

  • The contract takes part in two phases. The first phase called, “Practice Change” is 10 years. The second phase called, “Conservation” is 20 years.

During 10 years of practice change ranches integrate or further rotational grazing practices and we invest in your property to increase soil organic carbon and soil health. You’ll receive payments based on realized carbon capture and all reporting costs are covered alongside our co-investment in infrastructure.

During the continued 20 year conservation phase you can continue to engage in practice change and receive carbon payments, or you can choose to pause practices as long as you don’t materially disturb the soil carbon (e.g. mining, major construction, or tilling for row crops). This phase helps us ensure that the hard work you did to store carbon is not erased.

  • We view our relationship with you as a partnership where we both have skin in the game. If you leave during the 10-year “practice change” period, you will owe back some of the money you have been paid.

Kateri will have invested ten of thousands into soil sampling and technology on your property and we will have to assume all the carbon you have gained will be lost. However, to be clear, you will never owe back more than you have been paid.

  • Not to worry! There are natural cycles to the weather and seeing the results of this work may take some time. You will not be penalized for low carbon years – the worst case scenario is that there will be no carbon payment that year.

  • The contract can be assigned to a new landowner – if the new owner chooses to take up the contract then all responsibilities and liabilities move to them. If the new owner does not want to take up the contract, then it will be considered early voluntary termination by the original landowner.

  • Your are not penalized for events that are out of your control like wildfires. These are called “Unavoidable Reversals” & we have insurance.
